Moving Tips Save Time, Money, and Frustration

Moving in the Kansas City area? At Secure Moving & Storage we have some moving tips that will help make the move easier and less stressful!

Keep your move on schedule

As soon as you’ve made the decision to move, clean out the attic, basement, closets, and other areas where clutter often accumulates.

Call your moving company to make reservations about two to weeks in advance of moving. Be sure to ask what kind of equipment will be used, and if the company is insured – you’ll also want a copy of the policy.

Some items should be packed last, such as cleaning supplies you’ll need to sweep, mop, dust, etc. Be sure to defrost the refrigerator and clean the stove prior to your move!

Don’t forget all of the utilities and services you need to cancel and perhaps set up for your new address such as satellite or cable, utilities, telephone, water, newspapers, even lawn services. Also be sure to contact companies offering these services at your new address well ahead of time to ensure everything’s ready to go when you move in.

About a week before you plan to move, be sure to submit a change of address form at the post office.

What could you forget prior to moving?

Be sure you’ve discarded anything you no longer want or need in the yard, or to pack items normally used outdoors before your move.

Take a look at the walls – you don’t want to leave behind family photos or wall decor, and you’ll also want to be sure to disconnect electronics.

Before you move a washer, dryer, refrigerator, or other larger appliances you aren’t leaving behind, be sure to check for special instructions in the owners manual. Front load washer and dryers have special bolts used to keep the drum safe for transport.

Some furnishings have hardware, which you don’t want to leave behind by mistake. For drawer handles, screws, bolts, or other small pieces simply place in a storage or freezer bag, then tape the bag to the item it belongs with to avoid confusion when you arrive at your new home.

Certain essentials you’ll need for two or three days should be packed in a grab bag so you’ll know exactly where they are. Chargers for your wi-fi or cell phone, medications, toothbrushes, soap and shampoo, and other essentials should be packed so you know exactly where they are until the move is complete.

And a few other moving tips to make your life easier . . .

Free is always good, so look for cartons/boxes at retail and grocery stores, or even in the “free” section on Craigslist. Make sure to get boxes that have tops so your items can be stacked safely.

Don’t carry things you don’t use or need with you; instead, donate those no longer needed items. This will reduce clutter in your new home.

Before you unplug all those electronics, take photos so you’ll know how everything goes back together once you arrive at your new home.
